Morgan.

Let July be July.
Let August be August.
And let yourself
just be
even in
the uncertainty.
You don't have to fix
everything.
You don't have to solve
everything.
And you can still
find peace
and grow
in the wild
of changing things.

Karen.

The world is both burning and blooming

You get the bad news
and the sunrise in the same day.
You cry over the headlines,
then you laugh at a baby
wearing a hat shaped like a bear.
This is the dual citizenship
of being alive.
Rage and reverence,
grief and grace,
You are allowed to feel both.
You are allowed to scream,
& still notice how good the soup is.
You don't have to chose.

Hope

Hope has holes
in its pockets.
It leaves little
crumb trails
so that we,
when anxious,
can follow it.
Hope's secret:
it doesn't know
the destination-
it knows only
that all roads
begin with one
foot in front
of each other.

Not okay

I am not okay today.
So, in the absence of okay,
what else can I be?

I can be gentle.
I can be unashamed.
I can turn my pain into connection.
I can be a student of stillness.
I can be awake to nature.
I can sharpen my empathy
against the stone of my discomfort.

I am not okay,
but I am many worthy things.

Moments

There are moments that cry out to be fulfilled.
Like, telling someone you love them.
Or giving your money away, all of it.

Your heart is beating, isn't it?
You're not in chains, are you?

There is nothing more pathetic than caution
when headlong might save a life,
even, possibly, your own.

Rocío.

Lo que tiembla
y se desmorona
soy yo.

Lo que se abruma
y oscurece
soy yo.

La ciudad destruida
la gente extraviada
soy yo.

Marwan.

Para escribir una poesía
que no sea política
debo escuchar a los pájaros.
Pero para escuchar a los pájaros
hace falta que cese el bombardeo.

Mãe, aprendi a andar
porque o seu abraço
estava do outro lado da sala.

[Má.
Aprendí a caminar
porque tu abrazo
estaba al otro lado de la sala.]

Natalia.

Los poemas tristes
son un secreto homenaje a la alegría.
De ser posible, yo pediría ser barco,
uno que va hacia su naufragio
y sabe que hay un iceberg para él.
Mi vida consisitiría en aprender
a nadar tranquila.

María.

Cuando no tengo más que vida
no puedo permanecer en ella. Sólo
cuando me olvido de que estoy
viviendo es cuando de veras vivo.

Fernando.

Mary.

You don't want to hear the story
of my life, and anyway
I don't want to tell it, I want to listen

to the enormous waterfalls of the sun.

And anyway it's the same old story -
a few people just trying,
one way or another,
to survive.

Mostly, I want to be kind.

Shannon.

And when I turned to face grief,
I saw that it was just love in a heavy coat.

Toda declaración de amor es urgente porque nos vamos a morir.

Octavio.

Cada lector busca algo en el poema.
Y no es insólito que lo encuentre;
ya lo llevaba dentro.

Luna.

Para saber sanar hay que saber enfermar

Apareció una y luego otra y luego otra.

Era verano y estaban por todas partes
reproduciéndose como una plaga antigua.

Yo escuchaba sus latidos a través de la madera;
te pregunté si las cucarachas tenían corazón y
tú me dijiste que no sabías de eso.

Conocemos poco las cosas sencillas, pensé.

Nada nos importa hasta que duele.
